Starlight Literacy Programme (Mother Tongue Language)

Bilingualism is a cornerstone of Singapore’s education system. Learning our Mother Tongue Language (MTL) connects us to our cultural heritage, and deepens our understanding of our values, roots and identities.

The aim of MTL teaching and learning is for children to enjoy learning language in an active and interactive manner so that they will be able to develop their interest and confidence in using the language on a daily basis.

At MK, we nurture bilingualism by focusing on listening, speaking and engaging children in games and activities that encourage early literacy development.

We offer classes in the 3 official MTLs (Chinese, Malay and Tamil). We encourage children of Chinese, Malay and Indian ethnic races to take their own MTLs.

These are the three learning goals for our Starlight MTL Literacy Programme:

1. Enjoy and show an interest in learning Mother Tongue Language (MTL)

2. Develop foundational language and literacy skills in Mother Tongue Language

3. Develop an awareness of their local ethnic culture
